Anticipated Start Date: 10/27/2025

The US base salary range for this full-time position is provided below:

Senior: $243,750-$373,750

The range represents the amount bnsf | tech reasonably expects to pay for the position based on the level, scope, and responsibilities of the role.  Individual compensation and level of position offered is determined by the hiring location and additional factors including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. In addition to base pay and bonus eligibility, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

We’re building a modern internal platform that brings together virtual machines, containers, storage, data services, networking, observability, and developer experience, all managed as software. This platform spans multiple environments including data centers, edge systems, and cloud regions.

We’re hiring infrastructure and platform software engineers to help build, operate, and evolve this platform. You’ll join a focused team working on high-impact systems that enable developers to build and deploy safely, quickly, and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate across business and engineering teams to solve our toughest problems
• Execute a strategic software development plan for IaaS, encompassing virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes, Kubevirt, OpenStack, AWS,and Azure.
• Prioritize security, optimization for performance and efficiency across the entire development lifecycle.
• Own accountability for the quality, usability, and performance of the solutions
• Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
• Fulfill on-call responsibilities and offer operational support

Basic Qualifications

• 10+ years of PaaS and IaaS software development experience.
• 5+ years specializing in system design and implementation.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or other cloud services.
• 4+ years working with open-source frameworks.
• 1+ years of leadership experience leading cross functional technical teams.
• Strong software engineering and system architecture background.
• Experience with REST APIs, OpenStack APIs, Kubernetes (K8s) APIs, microservices, and containers.
• Experience with virtual machine provisioning frameworks utilizing Kubernetes operators such as Kubevirt or Crossplane.
• Experience of building best-in-class customer facing experiences
• Proficient in K8s and OpenStack with hands-on experience in cluster provisioning and management.
• Experience in high performance and highly reliable block and object storage systems
• Practical knowledge and experience in Linux and Windows operating systems, internals, and command-line utilities
• Comprehensive understanding of containerization technologies like Docker, Podman, and Rancher
• Familiarity with technologies such as ArgoCD, Cilium, Kubebuilder, and Kubevirt
• Expertise in automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Cloud Init, Crossplane, Pulumi, Terraform) for streamlined infrastructure provisioning
• Professional experience in software development using modern programming languages like Go (preferred) or Python, Typescript, Java
• Solid foundations in software engineering, experience in system design, implementation best practices, and testing methodologies
• Knowledgeable in security best practices for secure configurations and data protection
• Proven in optimizing CI/CD for efficient Infra SW services deployment and configuration using GitOps and ArgoCD
• Familiarity with security protocols and products, including Active Directory, Windows Authentication, SAML, and OAuth
• In-depth knowledge of computer science data structures and algorithms, coupled with strong problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to risk mitigation
• Familiarity with Crossplane and/or Kubevirt for virtual machine provisioning is highly desired
• Demonstrated ability to design and implement resilient, scalable, and efficient solutions
• Experience in building architecture and design, covering patterns, reliability, and scaling for both new and existing systems
• Excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or equivalent experience.
• Engineering experience with a public IaaS company (AWS, Digital Ocean, GCP, CoreWeave, etc.)
• Experience running infrastructure platforms in production such as OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, DBaaS, service mesh, and API gateways
• Experience with edge systems and hybrid environments
• Familiarity with developer tooling as a builder and/or user
• Interest in sustainable infrastructure and cost/resource awareness
• Experience with modern front-end frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js.
