The Supt Safety & Operating Practices (SSOP) is responsible for supervising a team of scheduled employees and providing oversight and management of all certification and testing compliance with Transportation on each division.  The SSOP will also provide direction and guidance to all departments, including Safety Coordinators so that activities, events, procedures, and information are aligned across the division.

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Lead proactive safety initiatives and programs across the division on SST, SACP, BAPP
  • Assist supervisors and managers of all departments on accident, incident, and injury protocol
  • Provide oversight for PTC, trip optimizer, crew qualifications, RCO and other emerging locomotive based technologies on the division 
  • Liaison with the system operating practices group
  • Proactively identify safety and testing trends to remove risk
  • Provide oversight of general notices, general orders, timetables and division playbooks
  • Lead, teach, and develop FLS and other leaders on effective messaging and coaching that supports our path to zero
  • Foster relationships with regulatory departments, foreign carriers and switching companies as it pertains to safety and train operations
  • Responsible for the LETP program, which determines hiring needs
  • Monitor reporting of rail equipment incidents, train separations and locomotive failures and work with system mechanical and division leadership to improve velocity and effectively manage volume on the division
  • Coordinate safe and economical train and switch engine operations within the division
  • Lead local site safety meetings to provide utmost value in helping make the terminal, division, region and system as safe as possible
  • Coordinate EST and Approaching Others training to continue to move us toward proactive risk identification vs. reactive problem solving post incident
  • Coordinate with manager of Engineer Certification to maintain the BNSF Engineer Certification Program including the Suspension and Revocation Policy
  • Coordinate with System Operating Practices & Technical Training to develop training materials/programs to address new technology and providing technical training as required

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must have 5 or more years of railroad experience
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and odd hours
  • Must be willing and able to travel approximately 60-70% of the time
  • Must have working knowledge of union agreements, rules, company policies and FRA regulations
  • Proven ability to identify safety problems impacting operations
  • Proficient in communicating and expressing ideas verbally and in writing
  • Capable of working well under pressure, controlling emotional situations, and taking responsibility for actions

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Locomotive Engineer and Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers (DSLE) Certifications
  • Experience with electronic air brake systems, track/train dynamics, distributed power, remote control equipment and training
  • Managerial experience as a Terminal Mgr, Mgr Safety, Terminal Superintendent, or Superintendent Operations
