Key responsibilities may include:

Track maintenance repair and installation; repair and rebuild railroad track as well as perform maintenance by pulling spikes, cutting, welding, or drilling rail. This also includes maintaining a clean right of way by removing hazards such as brush, trees, vegetation, litter, and cargo spillage.

Maintain trackbed which includes manually compressing ballast, remove/install ties and replacing, cutting, and adjusting rail in addition to lifting and carrying materials with assistance.

Operate equipment – power hand tools such as electric, pneumatic or hydraulic tools (drills, impact wrenches, jacks, power saws and grinders) as well as non-powered hand tools and shovels, picks, saws, and grinders.

Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Key responsibilities may include:

Communication responsibilities include obtaining, receiving, and acting on information (oral and written) through various devices, as well as monitoring and reporting daily work. This also includes climbing on/off equipment, managing hand brakes, connecting/disconnecting air hoses, replacing broken railcar knuckles, interpreting signals for train movement, and judge/control speed and clearance distances.

Switching functions involve operating track switches and derails to change train routing and checking switch points for proper alignment.

Train and equipment inspections include switching and spotting cars, determining train make-up, and inspecting cars per federal regulations. Monitoring track conditions for any issues/problems and reporting on passing train conditions.

Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

BNSF is committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as the well-to-wheel GHG emissions associated with our locomotives, 30% by 2030 (from a baseline year of 2018). Rail is already the most fuel-efficient form of land transportation, more than three times as fuel-efficient as trucks, and BNSF is investing to push our emissions reductions even further.

This air quality and carbon manager position is a unique opportunity to work with a diverse team of subject-matter experts across the organization to understand and advise on emissions issues impacting the business. In this position, you will work on criteria pollutant & carbon emissions calculations, policy, mitigation and grant programs. You will also work on future innovation projects related to next generation locomotive technologies, facility electrification, and other future innovations. You will work on projects that have visibility across the organization and at parent company Berkshire Hathaway.

The ideal candidate will have railroad and/or other transportation experience, as well as technical expertise related to criteria pollutants and GHG emissions, as they relate to rail transportation. The position will involve:

Managing regulatory compliance activities related to mobile source emissions reporting
Managing and collaborating with internal teams on annual GHG emissions reporting (including validation), including further developing strategies for managing scope 3 emissions sources
Managing criteria pollutant emissions modeling, including selecting consultants, overseeing their work, and communicating to internal stakeholders
Identifying and managing Federal and State incentive funding opportunities that further BNSF’s innovation priorities, including development and implementation of grant strategies
Collaborating with internal teams to advocate for BNSF in legislation, agency rulemaking and proceedings at the Federal and State level

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

5 plus years of experience related to the above duties & responsibilities

• Must have broad knowledge of railroad industry and operations; particularly as it relates to handling emergency situations such as derailments, load securement, and like events

• Must have a broad knowledge of criminal law and procedures

• Must be able to successfully lead people, often in a stressful critical-event environment

• Must be able to meet any government or Company training and retention standards

• Must live or be willing to relocate within 50 miles of the assigned work location

• Eighteen months of successful experience as a full time peace officer with a city, county, state federal or railroad law enforcement agency required

Key responsibilities may include:

Protects and safeguards company assets and resources including personnel, property and customer’s property entrusted to the company.
Conduct proficient, sensitive corporate and criminal investigations, provide accurate, detailed reports and provide court testimony when required.
Identify and properly handle trespassers on Company property and make arrests as appropriate.
Counsels and advises company officials to reduce crime and accidents and improve security; coordinates response to railroad emergencies; supervises contract security guards and trains other employees on relevant matters.
Perform aggressive crime prevention patrol of facilities, railroad property and trains, with special emphasis on TOFC/COFC, automobiles, and high value shipments.
