BNSF’s Marketing team serves as a primary contact for all BNSF customers, working to make the shipping experience as easy and seamless as possible. The Marketing team is focused on building strong customer relationships and ensuring effective communication throughout the shipping process. The team is organized into several critical business units to cater to diverse customer needs and industry demands: Agriculture and Energy, Consumer Products, and Industrial products, alongside specialized units for Customer Support, Forecasting, and Planning. Each of these units plays a role in tailoring our marketing strategies and services to meet the unique requirements of our wide-ranging customer base, ensuring a comprehensive and responsive approach to customer service and engagement.
This is a full-time position that can be located in Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota or South Dakota. For certain positions, including this one, employees can work one day per week remotely. Travel is significant, with a minimum of 50% of the time, and is subjective to be on-call to meet the demands of the business.
The Regional Economic Development Manager has responsibility for economic development projects and relationships in Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Key responsibilities may include:
- Direct, plan, and implement the location and expansion of profitable industries through coordination with the BNSF Marketing groups, customers, developers, state, local officials, and with other BNSF departments.
- Develop strategic plans for efficient and cost-effective utilization of BNSF and private assets that provide for the ongoing process of expanding BNSF's strategic network to create quality growth.
- Coordinate all aspects of locations, including track construction, lease, and/or purchase, site identification, zoning, environmental impact, etc. to create quality growth.
- Maintain an inventory of available sites and foster a broad network and develop relationships with communities, industry/customer officials, federal, state, and local governmental officials and economic development agencies, developers, real estate brokers, and site consultants.
- Qualify business opportunities and work closely with BNSF Premier Transload network to provide rail solutions and alternatives.
- Foster a broad network; and develop relationships with communities, industry/customer officials, federal, state, local government officials, economic development agencies, developers, real estate brokers.
- Maintain relationships and collaborate with key Site Location Consultants to educate them on BNSF Strategic Initiatives including our Logistics Parks, Logistics Centers, Certified Sites and Transloads.
- Generate strategic plans for enhancing the revenue base consistent with overall Company and Business Unit plans and strategies.
- Utilize strong teamwork and communication skills to build and create strong relationships within BNSF, the Economic Development team and our customers, partners and communities.
- Successfully identify new leads and prospects for new customer growth. This will include initiating conversations with key decision makers and their agents/representatives.
- Assist in development of cost/benefit (ROI) analysis and implement the results in the negotiation of industrial projects.
Daily work is conducted in a safety indoor office environment.

Basic Qualifications:
- Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
- Bachelor's degree.
- 6 years of business experience.
- Able to travel a minimum of 50% of time and be on-call to meet the demands of the business.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Broad knowledge of railroad operations, general business issues, real estate matters, economics, and marketing policies, strategies, and practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, engineering, economics, or economic development.
- 3 years of economic development, marketing, real estate, engineering, rail operations, planning and development, or industrial development experience.
- Master’s in business administration or other relevant Graduate degree.
- Proficient in Salesforce.
- Ability to handle significant workload in an environment with rapidly changing priorities.
