The Senior Manager, Advanced Energy Innovation serves as the lead engineer and project manager for BNSF’s advanced energy locomotive development and testing, including hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen-powered locomotives.  This position interfaces with operating departments for research, development, piloting, and operational testing.  This position will be responsible for test case development and tracking, program timelines, training, vendor management, technology evolution and will support internal/external communications.  This position will also coordinate with sales/marketing on sustainable business market opportunities and will coordinate with industry counterparts via rail industry participation.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Oversees testing and integration of Advanced Energy Innovation technologies (alternative power for locomotives, fueling/charging logistics, on-site power generation and storage) from solution identification to supply chain development to product testing /demonstration through operational integration via effective cross-functional stakeholder collaboration.
  • Works with locomotive manufacturers to design and deliver alternatively-fueled locomotives and equipment through collaboration with BNSF’s Transportation and Mechanical departments to ensure successful operational integration and develop plans to support locomotive conversion in support of BNSF’s sustainability goals.
  • Develops testing and implementation strategy for new/alternative energy technologies through collaboration with Operating departments and the Technical Research & Development team including physical testing, chemical analysis, and energy modeling to support route modeling and fueling infrastructure requirements. 
  • Responsible for field interaction including creation and delivery of change management, training, and safety programs (in conjunction with BNSF HazMat).  Coordinate with federal and local entities on operations logistics, planning, preparation and response. 

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Degree in engineering or science related field
  • 5+ years’ experience in Operations
  • Knowledge of regulatory framework and programs supporting emissions-reduction technologies
  • Knowledge of BNSF network including Transportation and Mechanical operating activities, with an understanding of facility logistics and operations
  • Demonstrated pattern of project ownership, management, and completion

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Self-starter, able to work autonomously and drive projects with minimal oversight
  • Ability to perform economic and operational modeling to determine true cost of technology solutions
  • Experience presenting findings to key stakeholders
