DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

This position primarily provides legal support on environmental matters.  Under the direction of in-house attorneys, this role will assist with various compliance, permitting, remediation and litigation tasks.  The position will require direct interaction and consultation with all BNSF business units and departments, coordinating with multiple attorneys, and serving as liaison with outside counsel and discovery vendors.

 

Representative Tasks:

  • Research, identify, organize, maintain and summarize documents for the purpose of responding to governmental inquiries (e.g. 104(e) requests, NOVs) and/or any associated litigation matters.
  • Provide litigation support including: case management, general research, document management and discovery assistance.
  • Conduct property and corporate records research related to lawsuits, claims, encroachments and other real estate related matters. 
  • Research responsible party information related to ongoing remediation sites. 
  • Provide first level environmental review, analysis, edits and/or comments on various sourcing contracts and real estate documents.
  • Work with the lease inspection risk management team to help identify potential environmental claims, assess party viability, assist in lessee communications and track progress. 
  • Perform legal/general research and analysis.
  • Provide administrative support on outside counsel budgets and budget tracking.

 

This position functions as part of a high-performing, cohesive environmental legal team and performs any tasks delegated and supervised by an attorney. Extended hours may be required on occasion.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor’s Degree is preferred, but we will also consider candidates with a Paralegal Certificate from an American Bar Association approved institution or certification as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal from the National Association of Legal Assistants.

 

Qualified candidates must have at least three years of experience as an environmental specialist/paralegal.  Experience in a law firm or corporate setting providing advanced paralegal support to attorneys handling complex matters, including experience managing e-discovery issues is preferred.

 

This position requires a candidate who is detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, an excellent communicator and works extremely well in a team environment.  The successful candidate will be a person that acts with a high level of accountability, takes initiative to identify and recommend solutions, takes ownership for the success of the team, and acts with a high degree of professionalism and ethics.

 

The successful candidate should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, an advanced understanding of and the ability to use the Microsoft Office suite, and enthusiasm about quickly learning how to utilize new computer applications.  Knowledge of Lexis/Nexis research system and other online research tools, and experience with legal billing systems.
