The Relief Bridge Operator position at BNSF Railway is responsible for operating and maintaining movable bridges, ensuring safe and timely passage of trains and maritime traffic. This role is crucial for preventing delays and ensuring the safety of both rail and waterway operations. By expertly managing bridge operations, the position supports the seamless flow of transportation and enhances the railroad's overall efficiency and safety.
This is a full-time (40hrs/wk) position, subject to mandatory overtime based on business needs and requires availability to cover alternate shifts that may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Shifts are governed by union agreement and are typically based on seniority. No guarantee of minimum hours per week.
Travel is minimal.
Training for this position is company-paid on-the-job training.
Key responsibilities may include:
Monitoring and directing marine and railroad traffic, raising, and lowering the lift bridge as needed, and give trackage rights for Engineering Department personnel.
Protecting personnel and equipment during train movements and operate railroad radio, marine radio, and phones.
Communicating with the Dispatching Office and Operations Supervisors for proper train movement and relay information from the United States Coast Guard to barge traffic about bridge restrictions.
Performing administrative functions such as ordering office supplies, preparing reports, and completing forms, as well as basic janitorial duties to keep the work area clean.
Conducting routine inspections and maintenance and handling hazardous materials when required.
Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications:
- Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status)
- At least 18 years of age or will be by the start date listed above.
- Valid, state-issued driver’s license
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
- Able to work safely in the above working conditions.
- Able to work the above shift/hours.
- Ability to meet the above typing requirement.
- Ability to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow and lunar (clear light)
- Ability to differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) and discriminate (comprehend) verbal communication in the work environment.
- Ability to identify, interpret and use hand signals from near and far and visually judge the speed and distance of moving objects.
- Ability to use hands and hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling.
- Ability to bend, walk, stand and sit for several hours with breaks.
- Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
- Basic-level skills in Microsoft Office Suite programs (i.e., Excel, Outlook, Word) with prior experience using Microsoft Office Suite programs in either a professional or academic setting.
Union membership is with the Transportation Communications Union (TCU) and union dues are required per union agreement.
