Application Process


You must submit an online application through the BNSF Careers website, www.bnsf.com/careers.

No. At BNSF, we do not accept paper applications or resumes (e.g. faxes, e-mails, etc.). To apply, visit the BNSF Careers website, www.bnsf.com/careers and click on the ‘View All Jobs’ button to get started.

Create or log in to your account on our careers site. Click the View Profile link, then select the box titled ‘My Documents’. Click the section for your resume, then click the Browse button to navigate to the resume file on your computer. Click on the file name. Click Upload and you are done.

Yes. A separate application must be submitted for each job you wish to apply for.

Upon completion of the online application process, applicants receive a confirmation e-mail. At this point, the application is submitted to the job of your choice. Applications are screened for the most qualified candidates to proceed to the next step in the process. To view the status of your application, log into your account and view your candidate profile. Click the box titled ‘Jobs Applied’. This will display a list of jobs you have applied for with your current status.

With regret, due to the large volume of applications, we are unable to personally respond to all applicant inquiries. All candidates will receive an e-mail when their status changes.

Once an application is submitted, there cannot be any changes or edits made to that application. However, if you wish to change your profile information for the future, please log in to your account, click ‘Profile Information’ and update your information and click ‘Save’.

Yes. If you do not specify any criteria and click ‘View All Jobs’, the system will display all current job openings.

Go to our Careers website, www.bnsf.com/careers and click on ‘Job Alerts’. Create a profile or log in to your existing profile. Search for a job currently posted and click to view the job description. The “Create Alert” option will be at the top of the webpage. You can also select “View Profile” and select ‘Options’ on the top right of your profile page. Select “Job Alerts” and “Create New Job Alert”. Enter a key word or location in the appropriate field then select ‘Create Alert’. When a position is posted that matches the job agents you input (i.e. Transportation, Marketing, Illinois, Fort Worth), you will be sent an email with a list of jobs posted.

Union agreements require that only promoted BNSF conductors can become locomotive engineers. Should an individual have the long-term goal of becoming a locomotive engineer for BNSF, an application can be submitted through the BNSF Careers website for a Conductor Trainee position.

The Resource Protection Team is responsible for all security measures at BNSF, including protecting BNSF people, freight, facilities, and the public BNSF serves. Those interested in employment should have had formal police officer training and preferably be a state certified police officer. If you possess these qualifications and are interested in employment with BNSF's Resource Protection Team, please submit your online application on the BNSF Careers website. If you do not find a posting available, it means the Resource Protection Team is not currently hiring. Please check back regularly as our hiring needs change frequently.

Basic Qualifications


A person must be at least 18 years of age to be employed at BNSF.

BNSF is committed to an alcohol and drug free workplace. Please note that it will be necessary for you to provide a hair specimen for this exam, which will test for certain drug use in the past 90 days. Hair specimens can be collected from EITHER the head or body and can be taken from several locations to get the required amount necessary for testing. Your application will not be able to move forward without completing this test. Please click here for more information regarding hair testing.

BNSF does test for some prescription medications. To be considered a valid prescription, a prescription order must be less than 12 months old. In addition, be aware that marijuana is among the drugs that are prohibited, notwithstanding any statute, ordinance, regulation, or other law that legalizes or decriminalizes the use or possession of marijuana, whether for medical, recreational, or other use.
